Join me for a weekly 75 min. drop-in drawing session on Zoom where we'll focus on a different drawing prompt using primarily drawing materials you have on hand and prefer. Recommended supplies provided with each prompt.

These sessions are intended to be collaborative, community based, and experimental. I will be facilitating and sharing techniques and drawing tips & tricks. The subjects are often open-ended and sometimes crowd sourced by attendees.

Sat. May 4th: Embracing Mistakes

In this session, we will discuss and explore the choices and impulses we make when unintentional marks or "mistakes" are made in a work of art. We'll start by making an ink blot or random mark/scribble on the page and then work to resolve it somehow by creating a drawing around it that feels intentional. We will use whatever materials you prefer and have on hand, but liquid ink and permanent markers or illustration pens are highly encouraged for the "mistake making!"

Sat. May 11th: Sketching With Brush Pens

This session is all about brush pens! We'll focus on organic still life items like fruit, flowers, feathers, or whatever you have on hand. I will share tips and tricks for how to achieve loose, sketchy, & brushstroke like effects when drawing with a brush pen. Recommended: at least one soft tip brush pen and one hard tip brush pen.

Sat. May 18th: Grid Drawing

Still struggling with proportions or perspective in your drawing practice? Using a grid could be the answer. In this session, I'll share the basic math skills needed to enlarge or transfer any image to your drawing paper. You will need: a print out of an image you would like to draw, a ruler, pencils, scratch paper, and your drawing paper for this session. Note: it may take almost our entire session to map out and set up the grids, but I will give individual help as needed and you will have all of the tools to complete your drawing on your own after the session.

Sat. May 25th: Drawing on Book Pages/Maps/Ephemera

Blank paper can be so intimidating! Drawing on old book pages, maps, and ephemera like sheet music etc is not only liberating, but it instantly creates a satisfying aesthetic. In this session, I will share tips & tricks for creating eye-catching compositions that stand out against a printed page. Recommended: illustration pens or markers and reference images with lots of high contrast.

Sat. June 8th: Visual Journaling Entry: Field Study of a Sentimental Object

Grab a sentimental object or cherished item and let's create a field study note page in our sketchbook that documents this item in a detailed and visually pleasing way. We will discuss layouts, statistical information that can be included in this journal entry, and tips & tricks for drawing this item that emphasize it's special qualities. Recommended: graphite pencils, illustration pens, markers, colored pencils, stamps, or any other supplies you have on hand and prefer.

Sat. June 22nd: Sketching a Light in the Dark

In this session, we will focus on how to achieve a glowing light effect in a drawing using white charcoal, toned paper, graphite, carbon and/or charcoal pencils. You can use your own reference images or share my reference images of various streetlights at night or lamplight in a dim room.

Sat. June 29th: Sketching Textures: Tree Bark

In this session, we will zoom way in on 3 images of tree bark and examine and sketch the details of their unique and captivating textures. Recommended: white charcoal, toned paper, graphite, carbon and/or charcoal pencils.
